Hi, You. Today I am so sad. My brother's girlfriend is from Ethiopia and is the absolute sweetest person I have ever met. She and my brother have been together for four years. They're buying a house together. My brother called me yesterday because she was stopped & was accused of shoplifting. She had been a few steps in front of my brother when they stopped her. She pulled out the receipt & showed them it but it wasn't until my (white) brother asked why they stopped her, that the let her go. Why is it 2020 and we are still fighting for equality?! I will never know her battle. I will never know what she has to deal with every day but it breaks my heart. I am so sad. I will never understand how the color of someone's skin makes them inferior. I am angry. I worry for their safety & the safety of my unborn niece/nephew who I can't protect. Why do we have to fight to make people care? -Me
