“Dear Mom, I have so many things to say to you I know not where to begin. I would like, i…”

Dear Mom, I have so many things to say to you I know not where to begin. I would like, if you are willing, to let me put all my thoughts into parts. Let us consider this “Part I” About a week ago, you wrote me a letter, and I have yet to formally respond to that. Before I address any part of that, I need to ask that you do me one favor - Let me introduce you to myself. I listen to the accusations - made almost daily, against you and Dad, and then you wonder why I won’t respond, or why I won’t engage you? Put yourself in my shoes for one moment. How would you feel if I accused you of being a drug addict all of the time? Or if I asked you if Dad was a pimp? Are you serious? Do you seriously believe these things? Then knowing that those things are not me (about you), think about how that would make you feel if every day, you had to defend yourself against those accusations? And more…there are equally outrageous and hurtful things I deal with, on a daily basis. If you really think these things about me, then you don’t know me at all. And that is the hurtful part. It’s as if I made a few mistakes as a teenager and now, no matter what I do to you, in your eyes, I’ll always be that “loser,” Thus, I challenge you to get to know me. To put aside what is in the past, and anything you thought you knew to be true, and look at me with fresh eyes. Can you do this? In order for any real, mature, and honest conversation to take place between the two of us, I NEED you to see me for who I am - to let go of any preconceived ideas of what or who I am. In turn, if you need me to do anything similar, I am willing to listen and try antigen you need me to try. I love you and want to work at mending this relationship, not letting it continue down this destructive, negative road. Sincerely, Your Daughter
